Darar was one of four Djiboutian soldiers who rescued Susan Craig, a former U.S. Marine Corps pilot, and her co-pilot, Maj. Heath Ruppert, following the Feb. 16, 2006 crash of two U.S. Marine Corps CH-53 helicopters off the coast of Djibouti, which killed 10 of the 12 personnel aboard.

As a team sergeant for the 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion at Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), Thompson was responsible for leading engagement teams into local communities outside Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

Seabees lend a hand

Members of U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion One assigned to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa assist members of the Djiboutian Armed Forces during the construction of modular shelter systems in and around Djibouti City, Feb. 27, 2017. The six military grade shelter systems were donated by Alaska Structures through the Global Action Coalition for use as schools, clinics, and centers for cottage industry to promote the health, education and economic stability of the Djiboutian people.
