The International Mine Action Training Centre
CJTF-HOA Featured Mission
The International Mine Action Training Centre (IMATC) is a joint British and Kenyan venture aimed at alleviating the suffering caused by landmines and Explosive Remnants of War by providing high quality Mine Action Training. The Centre opened in February 2005 and is located next to Nairobi’s international airport. The IMATC offers an excellent training opportunity for Mine Action due to the customized facilities, access to local Kenyan training areas and unique position in a neutral and secure location in Africa. East Africa's first dedicated dog detection center is now open at the IMATC and is currently home to six mine detection dogs. Training at the IMATC is exclusively humanitarian in nature and NGOs and other organizations operating in a mine affected region are welcome to use the facilities. On the doorstep of many mine-affected countries, the IMATC is ideally placed to provide training and advice to those countries. Different levels of training are offered at the Centre but the focus lies with manual demining techniques and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. Those trained at the Centre may be deploying on UN missions or courses may be focused on building a national capacity, usually under the direction of UNDP. The Centre also trains international NGO and commercial company staff to IMAS Level 3 EOD for deployment on company-specific missions. |
