Mark Stammer, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa commanding general, gives a toast during a reception on board the Republic of Korea’s Navy Choi Young Destroyer Dec. 21, 2015, in Djibouti. The ship’s primary mission is to provide aid for ship convoy operations, provide maritime security operations for counter piracy and sustain diplomatic alliances with foreign countries. The Choi Young commenced its counter-piracy operation on Nov. 27, 2015. The ship and its crew were critical in the success during Operation Dawn of Gulf of Aden on Jan. 1, 2011 when its visit, board, search, and seizure team rescued hostages from pirates on the ROK-operated chemical tanker, Samho Jewelry.
