AFRICOM, Djibouti leaders continue to strengthen ties

U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Michael Langley, U.S. Africa Command commander, met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Youssouf, during a recent visit to Djibouti, Nov. 22, 2023.

Youssouf met with Langley and U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Jami Shawley, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa commanding general, to discuss current and future operations in the country.

"Beyond the boundaries of our military camp, I had the privilege of meeting with the esteemed leaders of Djibouti. Our discussions emphasized the importance of collaboration and understanding as we work together to foster peace and security. In the heart of Djibouti, let us build bridges of friendship and cooperation, strengthening the bonds between our nations," said U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Michael Langley, Commander, U.S. Africa Command.

Langley is the combatant commander overseeing the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa based in Djibouti. This was Langley’s third visit to the country since taking command in August 2022.

Canine Casualty Care takes Flight
U.S. Army combat medics from Task Force Paxton, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Pennsylvania National Guard joined Air Force Pararescue from the 82nd Expeditionary Rescue Squadron, Navy Corpsman from 2nd Air Control Squadron, and French Security Forces with Military Working Dogs to conduct Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Care Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. Mar. 26, 2024. The purpose of the training is to ensure interoperability with key U.S. and foreign partner assets to conduct medical care on the MWDs and to expedite patient transfers to and from aircraft in the event lifesaving measures and medical evacuation are needed.

The East Africa Response Force (EARF), comprised of members from Task Force Paxton under the direction of CJTF-HOA, conducted an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise (EDRE) on April 3, 2024, assessing their capacity to effectively deploy, reinforce, and subsequently support any potential needs of the U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura, Burundi.

After 37 years of providing airfield management and air traffic support at deployed locations throughout the world, the 3-58th Airfield Operations Battalion embarks on their final deployment with the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa. The unit will be dissolved upon completion of their tour as part of a U.S. Army reorganization plan.
