CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – Medical personnel from the Djiboutian Armed Forces (FAD), Gendarmerie, the Battalion Intervention Rapide (BIR) and Djiboutian Coast Guard participated in the Fundamentals of Global Health Engagement (FOGHE) course. The course was sponsored by AFRICOM's Office of the Surgeon and hosted by SETAF-AF Civil Affairs Battalion, Functional Specialty Team (FxSP) in collaboration with Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) from February 24-28, 2025, at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

The course provided participants with an awareness-level understanding of DoD Global Health Engagement (GHE), emphasizing its role in supporting national security strategies and regional security objectives. Throughout the week, attendees explored the complex components of DoD global health efforts and gained insights into the elements of designing, planning, executing, and evaluating effective health engagement initiatives.

This is the second time this course has been conducted at CLDJ and first time conducted with a partner nation. The instructors of the course were from Medical Readiness Command Europe, Uniformed Services University Center for Global Health Engagement, AFRICOM and SETAF-AF Civil Affairs BN

“Global health engagement is a vital tool in strengthening partnerships, enhancing interoperability, and promoting regional stability,” said Sergeant Major Iris Almazan, FxSP Chief Medical NCO. “Through this course, Djiboutian medical professionals built a shared understanding of how collaborative health initiatives contribute to security cooperation and long-term resilience.”

By fostering cooperation between U.S. and Djiboutian medical professionals, the course reinforced the importance of sustainable health partnerships and laid the groundwork for future engagements aimed at improving health security in the region.
