Humans of HoA: Pfc. Saul Ballardo

I heard about the French Desert Commando Course and was instantly hooked. It sounded brutal, something to really test your mental and physical limits. Hearing stories from guys who'd done it, along with the constant support from my family, just made me more determined – I knew I could pull it off. They were my rock, especially when I had doubts.

About a year ago, I joined the National Guard.  I injured my knee during basic training, which meant no running and barely any walking for a while.  It took months to get back in shape, and it wasn't until last October that I felt like myself again.  Then I heard about this course and thought, "Yeah, I can totally do this."

After a tough selection process, I got to the training grounds feeling excited and nervous.  Stepping onto that hot sand, I knew this was going to push me to the edge. The reality hit fast: scorching heat, endless sand, and a crazy training schedule.  But I kept my eyes on the prize proving to myself I could handle it.

I pushed through the tough parts, reminding myself that every step got me closer. I started thinking of the course less as a nightmare and more as an adventure, a chance to grow.  That shift in my mindset helped me bond with the other service members participating and really appreciate overcoming each obstacle.

Every day was a mixture of challenges and wins; the grueling drills, rough terrain, and that hot, relentless sun. But in between these moments, there was also laughter, support, and those little victories that kept us going. The friendships I made out there became crucial, we encouraged each other, shared our worries and celebrated every success, big or small.

Each time I think about this pin I earned, I’m reminded that it was through sweat and pure grit, I look back on the whole experience with a lot of gratitude.  It was never just about finishing the course; it's about representing my unit and proving to myself I can conquer anything.  My family's support back home gave me that extra push to keep going when things got tough.

The biggest takeaways? Definitely perseverance, a positive attitude, and the power of teamwork. This whole journey will stick with me, and remind me that when things get rough, it's your spirit and determination, along with the love and support of your family and friends, that gets you through.
