Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa Image

KALAF, Djibouti- Water faucets remain unused due to maintenance issues while the people of Kalaf use hoses to siphon water from the top of the well, May 17, 2016, in Kalaf, Djibouti. U.S. Navy Cmdr. Chris Myers and Lt. Trang Tieu, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa J44 Force Engineers, and Abdi Ali, translator and guide, talked with the village elders, measured the water level and documented the overall structural status of the well and cistern to help determine improvements needed. U.S. Air Force Gen. Dagvin Anderson, commander, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), and AFRICOM senior leaders, conducted a series of high-level visits to Africa with stops in Ethiopia, Somaliland and Puntland, Nov. 23-27, 2025. The visits were part of an East Africa trip aimed to strengthen America’s strategic approach to confronting terrorism through mutual engagement, stronger cooperation, and aligned security priorities.
