October 5, 2013, was a day like most others for Staff Sergeant Luke Thompson. As a team sergeant for the 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion at Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), Thompson was responsible for leading engagement teams into local communities outside Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.
Members of U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion One assigned to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa assist members of the Djiboutian Armed Forces during the construction of modular shelter systems in and around Djibouti City, Feb. 27, 2017. The six military grade shelter systems were donated by Alaska Structures through the Global Action Coalition for use as schools, clinics, and centers for cottage industry to promote the health, education and economic stability of the Djiboutian people.

The Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa Religious Affairs Office, organizes frequent trips to Caritas Djibouti. The periodic visits are part of an ongoing effort to interact with religious leaders of different faiths in the local communities. This allows service members to make an impact on the locals and share experiences with the children who visit the mission daily.
